How to Connect to Your OpenClaw VPS Using an App

This guide will walk you through connecting your OpenClaw VPS to your OpenClaw App using Tailscale for a secure, private connection. Once connected, you can interact with your AI agent directly from your phone from anywhere.


Prerequisites


Before you begin, ensure you have:

  • An active OpenClaw VPS with OpenClaw installed
  • SSH access to your VPS
  • Your OpenClaw agent already set up (if not, complete the OpenClaw Agent Setup Guide first)


Step-by-Step Guide


  1. SSH into Your OpenClaw VPS.
  2. Run the setup for tailscale command:


setup-tailscale


  1. Follow the interactive prompts. The wizard will ask you to create your Tailscale Account (Tailnet). The terminal will display a login URL like this:



Note: If you already have a Tailscale account, simply log in with your existing credentials instead of creating a new one.


Then, click 'Connect' to connect your OpenClaw VPS with Tailscale.

  1. Wait for Configuration to Complete.


After authentication, the setup script will automatically continue and:


  • Connect your VPS to your Tailnet
  • Enable HTTPS certificate for secure communication
  • Publish the gateway (loopback - not exposed to the internet)
  • Enable mobile device pairing


You'll see a success message when complete:



Your VPS is now ready to connect to the mobile app.


  1. Install Tailscale and OpenClaw App on Your Phone.

  1. Log into Tailscale on your phone and use same Tailscale account you used in Step 3, where your VPS has already been added. Then, connect your phone to the same Tailscale network.


Important: Both your VPS and phone must be connected to the same Tailscale account and network for pairing to work.


  1. Go back to your VPS terminal and run command openclaw qr to pair your phone with the VPS.

  1. After running the command, a QR code will be displayed in the terminal. Open the OpenClaw App and scan the QR code to connect.
  2. After scan QR code, click 'Trust and Connect' in the OpenClaw App to establish the connection.



  1. Once the connection is established, test your bot. You should receive a response within a few seconds.
